The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team split a doubleheader against Chapman University in Orange, California, on March 9. The Titans lost the first game 3-2 but bounced back to win the second game 3-0.

In the opening game, freshman Maddie Pool made her collegiate debut with a strong performance. "Freshman Maddie Pool (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton North) put together a strong collegiate debut in game one," noted the release. She pitched six innings, allowing four hits and three runs—two of which were earned—and struck out six batters. Despite both teams having four hits each and committing three errors apiece, Chapman managed to secure the victory by capitalizing on key moments.

Illinois Wesleyan tied the score at 1-1 in the fourth inning after junior Anna Beckman walked and sophomore Hailey Milgazo hit a single. A sacrifice bunt from senior Jen Kuhn set up junior Casey Wissmiller for a sacrifice fly that scored Beckman. However, Chapman regained control with two runs in the fifth inning following consecutive singles and an IWU error.

In their final attempt to rally in the seventh inning, Illinois Wesleyan came close when freshman Bella Pinter hit a single and junior Claire Post reached base with an infield single. A sacrifice fly from freshman Jillian Bollard brought home sophomore Margo Geary, reducing Chapman's lead to one run before their comeback was halted.

In the second game, sophomore Mallory Holland delivered an impressive complete-game shutout for Illinois Wesleyan. "Sophomore Mallory Holland (Shelbyville, Ill.-Shelbyville) tossed a five-hit, complete-game shutout," stated the release. She allowed five hits but did not give up any extra-base hits or runs while striking out one batter.

Although outhit by Chapman 5-4 in this contest, Illinois Wesleyan took advantage of four Panther errors. Kuhn contributed significantly with two hits and two RBIs as part of her 2-for-3 performance alongside freshman Grace Wilkens who also went 2-for-3.

The Titans scored all their runs during the third inning when Wilkens singled and advanced on an error by Chapman’s defense before another error allowed them to take advantage of scoring opportunities created through sacrifices such as Milgazo's bunt followed by Kuhn's two-run double down left field line which sealed their victory at 3-0.

Chapman threatened again late into proceedings but failed ultimately due largely thanks once more due primarily towards solid pitching work done under pressure situations faced throughout especially those encountered during crucial stages like loading bases without conceding anything significant thereby preserving lead intact until conclusion thus ensuring successful outcome achieved ultimately overall despite challenges presented along way during course these games played between respective sides involved here today according schedule planned beforehand accordingly according initial Illinois Wesleyan will conclude its spring break trip with games against Case Western Reserve University and Bethel University on March 10 at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
