Illinois Wesleyan secures victory over Wisconsin-Stevens Point in lacrosse match

The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team secured a 9-6 victory against the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Sunday, March 23. This win improved IWU's record to 5-4, while UWSP remains winless at 0-6.

Junior Anelise DiGiovanni led IWU with three goals, matching her career-best performance. Junior Sarah Riepe followed with two goals. Sadie Newton contributed significantly with six draw controls and shared the ground ball honors with Avery Setzler, each collecting four.

Defensively, Sophie Shore, Riepe, and Setzler were pivotal by causing three turnovers each. Goalkeeper Lizzie Rymarcsuk made 11 saves for a .647 save percentage.

Statistically, IWU held advantages in shots (35-28), shots on goal (27-17), and draw controls (10-9). They also won the turnover battle 33-27. UWSP led in ground balls (30-25) and saves (18-11).

After trailing early by two goals, IWU leveled the score through DiGiovanni's efforts. Maddie Gibson assisted DiGiovanni to give IWU its first lead at 3-2. The Titans capitalized on a yellow card advantage when Setzler assisted Newton for another goal.

UWSP equalized in the third quarter but Gibson's unassisted goal restored IWU's lead before Setzler scored again to end the period at 6-4.

In the final quarter, after UWSP reduced the deficit to one goal, Fountain set up Riepe for a quick response. Riepe added another from a free-position attempt to extend their lead further. Newton then assisted DiGiovanni for her third goal sealing the game at 9-6.

IWU will continue their road games against DePauw University on Wednesday, March 26 at 7 p.m. ET.
