Senator Michael Balkema has highlighted several significant issues in his latest weekly update. On April 28, 2025, he addressed multiple topics, including the National Day of Prayer, which is set to occur on May 1. Established in 1952, the event encourages people from all faiths to unite in prayer for the nation.

In legislative matters, Balkema and other members of the Illinois Senate Republican Caucus sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi. They seek federal guidance to ensure fairness in girls’ and women’s athletics in Illinois high schools amid conflicting state directives. The IHSA has been directed by both the Illinois Attorney General and the Department of Human Rights to allow athletes to compete based on gender identity. Senator Balkema expressed concerns over this directive potentially conflicting with federal law, emphasizing the need for clarity on how Illinois should respond to the February 5 Executive Order titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports," issued by former President Trump.

Additionally, Balkema co-sponsored Senate Bill 1256, which passed unanimously in the Illinois Senate. This legislation is designed to ease regulations for people with disabilities by changing the frequency of required certification for disability plates and parking decals from annually to every five years, and permitting licensed physical therapists to sign off on applications.

On a different note, Senator Balkema hosted the Youth Advisory Council for high school students, engaging them in a legislative simulation centered on ensuring clean drinking water in schools. He expressed enthusiasm for the students' engagement and ideas.

With spring in full swing, Balkema also reminded Illinois drivers to exercise caution as farmers commence planting season. The presence of large farm equipment on roads has increased, necessitating vigilance and patience from drivers.

In other news, Senator Balkema extended congratulations to Caterpillar on its 100th anniversary. Reflecting on his three-decade tenure with the company, he lauded Caterpillar’s contributions to infrastructure and community building, underscoring its longstanding dedication and innovation.
