With the start of July, several new state laws have been implemented in Illinois. Among them is the Access to Affordable Insulin Act, which lowers the out-of-pocket cost for insulin to $35, down from the previous cap of $100. Additionally, eligibility for assisted living facilities has been expanded to include individuals requiring non-routine catheter care.

A new law aimed at preventing opioid overdoses mandates that state agencies ensure availability of opioid antagonists like Narcan and provide staff training in their use. The law also offers civil liability protection under the state's Good Samaritan Act.

Foreign language interpreters will now be available at no cost for witnesses, self-represented litigants, and low-income individuals in Illinois courtrooms. Judges are required to inquire if interpretive assistance is needed.

In education news, a direct admission program for most Illinois public colleges and universities has been signed into law by the Governor. Starting with the 2027-2028 school year, qualified students will receive preliminary offers of acceptance without needing to fill out applications. However, this does not apply to the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and the University of Illinois Chicago.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has warned motorists about buckling pavement due to hot weather and humidity. This phenomenon can cause uneven driving surfaces but usually does not damage road foundations. IDOT crews will monitor roads and can quickly repair any issues reported by calling (800) 452-4368 or contacting law enforcement.

The state's current bill backlog stands at approximately $2.5 billion as processed by the Illinois Comptroller's office.

Recent headlines include a call from the Illinois Department of Revenue urging late tax filers to act promptly, charges against 13 individuals in Illinois as part of a national health care fraud takedown, ComEd's application opening for a $10 million relief fund for high electric bills, federal sentencing recommendations for an ex-suburban mayor and county commissioner, and a suggestion to donate extra garden harvests to food pantries.
