Illinois State Representative Jason Bunting has raised concerns about the focus of state leadership, arguing that attention is being diverted from pressing state issues to federal matters. In his latest update, Bunting criticized what he described as "grandstanding" by Illinois political leaders.

"Illinois has some of the highest property taxes in the country," Bunting stated. He also pointed out that farm families and small businesses are often forced to sell when a family member dies due to what he called a "broken estate tax system." Bunting referenced ongoing issues with corruption in state government, rising energy prices, an unfunded pension liability exceeding $100 billion, and an unemployment rate higher than the national average. He said these challenges have led to an unsustainable budget path marked by increasing taxes and spending.

Bunting expressed frustration that instead of addressing these problems, "our state’s top political leaders have spent most of this year seeking to distract people from these state-level issues by constantly making high-profile statements about federal issues, which are outside of our jurisdiction." He noted that the House of Representatives had devoted time to passing resolutions on federal topics and criticized the Governor for controversial remarks during the State of the State address.

"Illinois has one of the nation’s largest congressional delegations out in Washington DC. Their job is to tackle federal issues. Each of us: the Governor, the statewide officials, and all 177 members of the General Assembly, were elected to solve the problems facing Illinois – not waste our time by wading into federal controversies we have no authority to address," Bunting said. He called for lawmakers to "stop the grandstanding and get to work on the state-level problems we were elected to solve."

In addition to commentary on legislative priorities, Bunting announced a free paper shredding event scheduled for September 13 at Bruce Township Hall in Streator. The event will run from 9 a.m. until noon and is designed as a drive-up service for residents who wish to securely dispose of confidential documents. Bunting encouraged community participation and offered constituents an opportunity to discuss concerns with him and his staff during the event.

Bunting also highlighted his recent visit with the Glazik Family at Cow Creek Organic Farm in Paxton. He described learning about grain handling systems and livestock integration aimed at improving soil health and sustainability. "Overall, the day was not only educational but also a wonderful reminder of the innovation and collaboration happening right here in our district," he said.

With Farm Safety Week beginning September 15, Bunting invited constituents to share their own practices or lessons related to farm safety. He asked residents to contact his office or reach out via RepBunting.com with their ideas.

On fiscal matters, Bunting reported that Illinois currently has $1.95 billion in unpaid bills submitted for payment—a figure up from $1.6 billion at this time last year—and noted this does not include unfunded debts such as pension liabilities exceeding $100 billion.

Bunting was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 106th House District in 2023, succeeding Thomas Bennett.
