The Town of Normal has opened applications for its community education initiative, All About Normal. The program will select 20 participants aged 15 and older, with applications accepted until Friday, September 26.
“This program is for those who want to learn more about our community,” said Jacob Smith, Town of Normal administrative analyst. “This free program shares information about local government operations and services provided by the Town. Participants will meet Town Council members and Town staff to learn the nuts and bolts of municipal processes.”
All About Normal was first introduced in 2009 but was paused during the pandemic. The age requirement has been lowered from 18 to 15 this year.
The program emphasizes interactive learning and participation, under the theme “Community Learning for a Brighter Tomorrow.” Sessions are scheduled on Wednesday evenings from October 8 through December 10 at City Hall and other municipal facilities such as the police department, fire department, public library, children’s museum, and theater.
“This isn’t a death-by-PowerPoint program,” Smith added. “Interactive sessions will use participatory learning to share education and information about the Town. The program focuses on connecting and learning with like-minded individuals to help shape the future.”
Priority admission will be given to residents of the Town of Normal. No previous leadership experience is required for applicants.
Participants will explore topics including local history, council-manager government structure, planning and land use issues, economic development efforts, Uptown Normal projects, public safety operations, cultural enrichment programs, and collaboration with community partners.
A full list of session topics can be found on the All About Normal page on the Town website. Those interested should submit their application form by September 26; successful applicants will be notified by Wednesday, October 1.
