For the third consecutive year, Ian Turnbull, a junior from Illinois Wesleyan University, has been named to the Second Team All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) for his performances in singles and doubles. This announcement comes as the league prepares for the upcoming CCIW Tournament hosted by Augustana College from May 1-3.
Illinois Wesleyan University enters the tournament with a record of 5-13 overall, and 1-6 in conference contests, securing the No. 7 seed. Their quarterfinal matchup is set against the second-seed Carthage College on May 1, at the Westwood Sports Center in Sterling, Illinois. Carthage boasts a 17-6 overall record and a share of the CCIW Regular Season Championship with a 6-1 league record.
Turnbull, who holds the top position in both singles and doubles, has earned all-conference honors by achieving a 3-3 record in these categories. His singles victories came against Wheaton College, Elmhurst University, and Millikin University. In doubles, Turnbull and Ben Vigneri, a fellow junior, defeated the top teams from Millikin and Augustana. In another pairing with fifth-year Ryan McCoy, Turnbull secured a doubles win over Elmhurst. Chase Tomecki, a sophomore from Illinois Wesleyan, received the CCIW RESPECT award for the second year in succession.
The Titans face Carthage, a team they have faced 37 times since 1991, with the latter holding a 36-5 advantage. In their latest encounter in the regular season, Illinois Wesleyan lost 7-0 to Carthage.
The tournament's opening day comprises four matches, with Illinois Wesleyan's match starting at 2 p.m. Scheduled outdoor matches have been moved indoors to the Westwood Sports Center due to anticipated bad weather, with hopes to return to Lincoln Park at Augustana College afterwards. Match results will be revealed on IWU's sports website upon conclusion.
Additional accolades announced include Ramon Vilarroig Martinez from North Central as CCIW Student-Athlete of the Year, while Finn Morris from Carthage received the First-Year Student-Athlete of the Year title. Augustana's David DeSimone was named CCIW Coach of the Year.
