In Illinois, State Senator Chris Balkema is backing legislation designed to address the growing deer population, aiming to aid farmers, drivers, and rural landowners. The co-sponsored Senate Bill 710 seeks to reform outdated wildlife regulations.

"This is a practical solution to a costly problem," stated Senator Balkema. "This bill tackles a problem that touches everyone in Illinois. It protects farmers from devastating crop losses, helps reduce deer-related car accidents, supports healthy wildlife management, and shields consumers from rising food costs. It's a smart, balanced approach to a growing problem."

Senate Bill 710 proposes easing restrictions under the Illinois Wildlife Code, making it simpler for landowners and tenants to get deer hunting permits. It allows additional antlerless-only permits for those demonstrating effective population control and permits for owners and tenants of 40 acres of commercial farmland to obtain firearm and archery hunting permits solely for that land.

"This is about balance — supporting the people who feed our state, protecting drivers and families, and keeping our deer population healthy," Balkema emphasized. "SB 710 is a smart, responsible step in the right direction."

The bill was developed with input from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Illinois Farm Bureau. After passing the Senate unanimously, SB 710 is now moving to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
