While families are adjusting their budgets, Democrats in Springfield are proposing a $6 billion tax increase to support the largest budget in Illinois history. Governor Pritzker's budget has grown by over $15 billion since he took office, and now he is asking Illinois residents to pay more on various items, including digital ads and family farms. The state already has the highest tax burden in the nation. These new taxes could raise prices, deter investment, and threaten family-owned businesses. Instead of reducing waste, Democrats are focusing on programs for non-citizens and expanding government. "I am standing up for working families, fighting for lower taxes, and ensuring people can afford to live in Illinois," stated Senator Balkema.

As Illinois faces economic challenges, Governor Pritzker has embarked on a national tour to boost his political profile. He has prioritized out-of-state campaign stops over addressing critical issues at home. With high unemployment, rising costs, and record property taxes affecting residents, Pritzker is traveling nationally rather than improving the state's condition. "Illinois deserves a leader who puts Illinois first," said Senator Balkema.

In response to safety risks and farmers' concerns about deer overpopulation causing damage, Senator Balkema co-sponsored legislation to streamline the permit process for harvesting deer. The Illinois Senate unanimously passed this bill on May 1. "This is a practical solution to a costly problem," said Balkema. Senate Bill 710 eases regulations under the Illinois Wildlife Code to facilitate obtaining deer hunting permits for landowners and tenants who demonstrate effective population reduction efforts.

Senator Balkema attended the 40th Annual Illinois Police Officers Memorial Ceremony last week to honor fallen officers and K9s who died in service. This year marked the first formal recognition of fallen K9 officers like K9 Draco from the Pontiac Illinois Police Department. "We owe them all a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid," said Balkema.
