A new hiring trend in Illinois is drawing attention as Senator Chris Balkema (R-Channahon) raises concerns over the rapid increase in government jobs. Since 2023, the state has added approximately 100,000 jobs, with more than half being in the public sector. The Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability (COGFA) reports that 44,600 of these jobs were created by local, state, or federal governments.
Senator Balkema questions this expansion: “45,000 new government jobs in two years—yet no one can point to a crisis in 2023 that called for this kind of hiring spree,” he said. He further asked, “The services didn’t suddenly collapse. So what are Illinois taxpayers getting in return for this massive expansion?”
The financial implications are significant, with estimates suggesting these positions could cost over $4 billion annually. Balkema warns that such spending is unsustainable and complicates efforts to maintain a balanced budget.
In contrast to the growth in government jobs, private sector employment has been less robust. The report notes that construction saw an increase of 10,400 jobs while manufacturing grew by just 1,100. However, financial and professional services experienced a decline of 40,000 jobs during the same period.
“This lopsided growth tells a troubling story,” Balkema remarked. “A strong economy depends on a thriving private sector, not a government hiring boom that taxpayers are left to fund.”
Balkema advocates for reevaluating the necessity of these new roles and reallocating resources towards services that directly benefit residents. He stated: “We need to focus on tax reduction and private sector job growth,” adding that “Illinoisans deserve better than runaway bureaucracy. They deserve accountability.”
