After receiving feedback from Illinois residents burdened by property tax increases, State Senator Chris Balkema (R-Channahon) is taking legislative action. He is co-sponsoring a bill aimed at capping significant rises in home assessments to bring stability to the property tax system.
“This is about protecting homeowners from being blindsided by sudden spikes in their property taxes,” Balkema stated. “People are doing everything they can to make ends meet, and the last thing they need is a massive new bill in the mailbox.”
Senate Bill 2246, which Senator Balkema co-sponsors, proposes limiting annual increases in assessed home value to the rate of inflation unless physical improvements have been made to the property. The bill also includes measures to prevent municipalities with home rule authority from circumventing these protections, aiming for uniformity across Illinois communities.
Balkema highlighted that Illinois homeowners face challenges due to rising living costs and interest rates. He expressed concern that increasing property taxes are pushing many households toward financial instability and out of the state.
“We have people delaying retirement, skipping home repairs, or putting off plans for their kids’ future because of a skyrocketing tax bill,” he remarked. “This bill offers a real solution — not more bureaucracy, not more excuses.”
At the federal level, discussions continue around reforms like the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction intended to alleviate taxpayer burdens. Balkema praised these efforts and called on Governor Pritzker to show similar dedication within Illinois.
“People deserve action now. We can’t let another year go by where families are forced to choose between staying in their home and keeping up with bills,” Balkema said. “Let’s make this the year Illinois puts homeowners first.”
Senate Bill 2246 has been filed and awaits a hearing in the General Assembly.
