The Illinois General Assembly has concluded its spring session, and concerns have been raised about the state's budget growth under Governor JB Pritzker. In six years, the budget has expanded by nearly 40%, marking a significant increase in government spending in Illinois.
Recent legislative actions included nearly $1 billion in new spending and revenue. Proposals to raise taxes were introduced but not enacted. These included a $1.50 delivery tax on packages, a service tax on everyday needs like haircuts and home repairs, and a digital ad tax affecting small businesses.
Critics argue these measures would disproportionately affect working families, seniors, and small businesses already facing financial challenges. They contend that such taxes would increase costs for essential services and hinder economic opportunities.
Governor Pritzker's approach contrasts with federal efforts to cut taxes and provide relief for working people. Concerns have been expressed about the growing state government sector compared to private-sector job growth in neighboring states.
A petition is being circulated to oppose higher taxes, urging citizens to demand fiscal responsibility from the state government.
Additionally, open houses are scheduled for June 11 in Dwight, Pontiac, and El Paso. Representatives Jason Bunting and Dennis Tipsword will join these events aimed at engaging with constituents and providing information on state resources.
