Illinois Wesleyan University has announced the addition of Mustafa Bakirdan to its women's soccer coaching staff. Mustafa, an alumnus of the Titan men's soccer program, will serve as a full-time assistant coach under his father, head coach Oz Bakirdan. This marks the first time the program has had a full-time assistant.
Mustafa graduated with a degree in mathematics from Illinois Wesleyan University in May. During his time at IWU, he was instrumental in leading the men's soccer team to its first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Championship and NCAA appearance in 2023.
"I am incredibly fortunate to have my son, Mustafa, join our coaching staff this season," said Oz Bakirdan. "Having him by my side is truly a special moment for both of us, and I couldn't be more proud to see him step into this role. His knowledge of the game, ability to connect with players, and passion for Illinois Wesleyan as a former student-athlete will be invaluable to our program as we continue to build on our success. I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to our upcoming season."
The coaching staff also includes volunteer assistant coach Ron Smith and part-time assistant coach Caelyn Steffens. Mustafa has been active on campus as recruitment chair and philanthropy chair of Theta Chi Fraternity's Beta Rho Chapter. He has also served as a teaching assistant in the mathematics department and worked as a Titan Orientation Leader.
Mustafa brings significant coaching experience, having volunteered during IWU women's soccer spring training and conducted training sessions with junior high and high school athletes in Morton and Bloomington areas. He also coached with Morton United FC.
The new season begins on August 29.
