Neis Soccer Field | Illinois Wesleyan Titans
Illinois Wesleyan University's women's soccer team opened its season with a 2-1 loss to Simpson College at Neis Field on Friday, August 29. The Titans now hold a record of 0-0-1, while Simpson begins their season at 1-0-0.
The match started with strong defensive play from Illinois Wesleyan, who managed to stop several early attacks by the Storm, including two corner kicks within the first 16 minutes. Despite this effort, Simpson's Ally Hoffa scored twice in quick succession during the 25th minute. Her second goal came after an Illinois Wesleyan turnover near their own goal line. The Titans were unable to score in the first half and entered halftime trailing by two goals.
In the second half, Illinois Wesleyan increased its offensive pressure. Senior Jenna Gravitt (Morton, Ill.-Morton) scored her second career goal for the Titans in the 58th minute following a free kick that led to confusion near the net. Sophomore Keira Robinson (Bloomington, Ind.-Bloomington South) had two late chances but narrowly missed scoring in the final ten minutes.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ella Randall (San Francisco, Calif.-The Bay School of San Francisco) matched her career-high with 11 saves during the game, eight of which came in the second half.
Illinois Wesleyan will next face WashU, last year's national champions, at Neis Field on Tuesday, September 2 at 5 p.m.
