The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team secured a 2-1 win over Centre College on Sunday, August 31, during the final day of the JR Hoe Invitational hosted by Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky. With this result, Illinois Wesleyan improved its season record to 2-0-0, while Centre College dropped to 0-2-0.

The match opened with early pressure from Centre College, but Illinois Wesleyan's junior Matthew Perchik forced a turnover and initiated an attack that led to the first goal. Perchik played the ball out to sophomore Ben Lyons, who sent it over the Centre backline. Junior Ryder Coleman won possession against three defenders and set up Lyons for a one-on-one opportunity. Lyons scored in the 16th minute to give Illinois Wesleyan a 1-0 lead.

Three minutes later, Illinois Wesleyan extended its advantage. After regaining possession near midfield following a free kick, Perchik took a shot that was blocked by a sliding defender. He then recovered the deflection and crossed to junior Joey Rodino at the back post, who volleyed in the second goal in the 19th minute.

Centre College reduced the deficit early in the second half after being awarded a penalty kick. The Titans' defense, led by senior Sam Kedzior, held off further attacks for the remainder of the match. Kedzior made five saves on 15 shots faced as Illinois Wesleyan finished with eight corners and 16 total shots.

Illinois Wesleyan will play its home opener against Illinois College on Wednesday, September 3 at Neis Field. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
