The Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability released Illinois' August revenue report, showing modest gains in some areas while others remained flat or declined. The report highlighted slow economic growth and continued inflationary pressures. While income tax receipts increased compared to the previous year, other sources such as corporate income tax payments and cigarette taxes showed stagnant or negative trends. Cigarette tax revenue continues its long-term decline due to fewer people smoking traditional cigarettes, with many turning to e-cigarettes or nicotine pouches. In response, this year's state budget included a significant tax increase on non-cigarette tobacco products.
Next week marks Farm Safety Week in Illinois, from September 15-21. Farming remains one of the most dangerous professions in the country, with over 500 deaths annually nationwide according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Common risks include tractor overturns, grain storage accidents, large animals, hazardous chemicals, extreme weather conditions, and highway incidents involving farm equipment. Mental health for farmers is also a focus during this week.
Rep. Jason Bunting stated: "Each year, right around the start of harvest season, we set aside this week to stress the importance of farm safety. Take some time this coming week to focus on ways to stay safe on the farm and things you can do to keep others safe as well. And feel free to share your ideas about ways to keep farmers safe by reaching out to me by phone or through RepBunting.com."
A free paper shredding event will be held Saturday at Bruce Township Hall in Streator from 9 a.m. until noon. Residents can securely dispose of confidential documents through this drive-up service.
Rep. Bunting commented: "This is a good opportunity to protect yourself from identity theft by safely and securely shredding your old confidential documents." He added that his staff would be available during the event for any state government concerns.
Earlier this week, Rep. Bunting participated in Paxton's Annual Never Forget 9/11 Memorial Event hosted by the Paxton P.R.I.D.E Group.
He said: "Thank you to the Paxton P.R.I.D.E. Group for inviting me to speak at the Annual Never Forget 9/11 Memorial Event under the Grand Old Flag this week. This day serves as a solemn reminder of the nearly 3,000 lives lost in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, including the brave first responders who ran toward danger to save others. It was an honor to join our community in remembering the victims, honoring the heroes, and reflecting on the unity we all felt as Americans in the days that followed."
He also praised local participants: "The PBL High School Band and Chorus did a fantastic job with their performances, and I truly enjoyed seeing the motorcycles passing through town as part of the remembrance. Events like this ensure that we continue to pass on the lessons of that day to future generations—may we always remember and never forget."
Currently, Illinois has $2.8 billion in unpaid bills submitted for payment—a figure that fluctuates daily but has increased since last year when it stood at $2.3 billion at this time. This total does not include unfunded debts such as pension liabilities exceeding $100 billion.
Jason Bunting was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 106th House District in 2023 after succeeding Thomas Bennett.
Recent statewide news includes rising home prices amid supply concerns; confirmation of seventeen West Nile Virus cases; and opportunities for farmers and agricultural haulers to apply for free Illinois Harvest Permits allowing them to exceed standard weight limits.
