The Illinois Wesleyan University women's golf team secured first place at the IWU Fall Classic, held Sunday, September 14, at Ironwood Golf Course in Normal, Illinois. The Titans finished with a total score of 595, edging out DePauw University by three strokes to claim their first victory in the tournament's 25-year history.
Sophomore Gigi Zera placed third individually after shooting consecutive rounds of 73. Junior Emily Gastrau also finished in the top ten with a combined score of 150. Sophomore Grace Fagan and senior Brooke Erhard tied for ninth place; Erhard matched her career-best round with a one-over-par 73 on the final day.
DePauw University's Becky Williams set a tournament record with a six-under-par 29 on the back nine to win the individual title and bring DePauw close to overtaking Illinois Wesleyan. However, birdies from Erhard late in the round helped secure the Titans' win by three strokes. Other teams finishing in the top five included Dubuque, Aurora, and Trine.
Illinois Wesleyan will compete next at the UW-Whitewater Fall Invite in Madison, Wisconsin, scheduled for September 28-29 at TPC Wisconsin.
