Illinois Wesleyan women's soccer claims third straight win with victory over Wartburg

The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team secured a 2-1 win against Wartburg College on Sunday in Waverly, Iowa. This marks the third consecutive victory for Illinois Wesleyan, bringing their season record to 3-2-0. Wartburg's record fell to 2-5-0 after the match.

Illinois Wesleyan established an early lead by scoring two goals within the first 15 minutes. The opening goal came from sophomore Liza Wiley, who capitalized on midfield pressure following a goal kick. Senior Kayley Carew collected a loose ball and passed it to Wiley, who scored from 25 yards out less than six minutes into play.

Ten minutes later, sophomore Keira Robinson initiated an attack down the sideline after a throw-in and passed back to junior Sophie Lampert. Lampert scored with a shot inside the far post, increasing Illinois Wesleyan's lead to 2-0.

Sophomore goalkeeper Vanessa Gray made six saves during the game to help maintain her team's advantage until Wartburg managed to score in the 89th minute. Despite being outshot 16-9 and facing seven shots on target compared to their four, Illinois Wesleyan held on for the win. Wartburg also had more corner kicks than Illinois Wesleyan, with a count of four to two.

Illinois Wesleyan will continue its series of away games with a visit to Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
