Conservative activist Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was killed during an attack at an outdoor event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. The incident follows a series of violent acts targeting political figures, including the killing of Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband in June, as well as two recent assassination attempts against President Trump. Illinois State Senator Chris Balkema commented on the tragedy: "Please join me in praying for his family and for our nation as we all grieve this unnecessary loss. Violence has no place in political discourse. We all need to be respectful of each other and listen to different points of view while doing everything possible to promote peace."

In Chicago, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has launched Operation Midway Blitz, a new effort aimed at curbing illegal immigration. ICE officials involved in the operation are focusing on apprehending violent criminal illegal aliens, including gang members and individuals accused of serious crimes such as rape, kidnapping, and drug trafficking who were released under current sanctuary state policies. Balkema criticized Illinois’ expanded TRUST Act from 2021, which restricts cooperation between state or local government and ICE: "These current laws put our families and friends at risk. Illinois state officials need to work with federal officials hand in hand to ensure safety throughout our great state." Balkema was elected to represent Illinois' 53rd Senate District in 2025, succeeding Thomas M. Bennett (https://www.ilga.gov/senate/Senator.asp?GA=103&MemberID=3210).

The Illinois Senate Republican Caucus is organizing its annual Veterans Day Wall of Honor display at the Statehouse from October 28 to November 13. The event invites families across Illinois to submit photos and stories honoring veterans for inclusion in a large electronic display and a wall where visitors can leave notes of thanks. Submissions should include a photo and written story (up to 250 words), along with details such as name, military branch, and conflict served. Entries can be sent by email or mail by October 24.

Illinois’ August revenue report indicates mixed results for the state’s finances: income tax collections increased while corporate and cigarette taxes declined. The decrease in cigarette tax revenue is attributed partly to smokers switching to alternative products. Inflation and slow economic growth remain concerns for policymakers, while a new tax hike now targets non-cigarette tobacco products.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is accepting applications for free Harvest Permits that help farmers move crops more efficiently during harvest season.

Additionally, the Office of the State Fire Marshal has opened applications for its Small Equipment Grant Program.
