The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Illinois College on Wednesday at Neis Field in Bloomington, maintaining their unbeaten record at 5-0-2. Illinois College's record now stands at 4-2-1.
Sophomore Ben Lyons scored the only goal for the Titans in the 18th minute, marking his fifth goal of the season and continuing his streak of scoring in all but one match so far. Blye Bickman, a sophomore transfer, assisted by sending a volleyed pass that Lyons converted past the goalkeeper.
Illinois Wesleyan had further chances to extend their lead in the first half. Junior Joey Rodino managed to get a shot past the goalkeeper from 15 yards out, but defenders from Illinois College cleared it before it crossed the line. Junior Ryder Coleman also created an opportunity close to goal but sent his shot over the net.
Illinois College increased their offensive efforts late in the first period and throughout the second half. In the 35th minute, Adan Leon nearly tied the game, but Illinois Wesleyan's senior goalkeeper intervened just before halftime.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, J'aiden Cranwell-Meneses equalized for Illinois College with a left-footed shot from outside the box that found its way into the top left corner of the net.
Illinois College continued to apply pressure for much of the second half. Senior goalkeeper Sam Kedzior made six saves—his highest total this season—while facing ten shots overall, eight of which were on target. The Titans' defense contributed two team saves as well.
Illinois Wesleyan finished with twelve shots compared to ten by Illinois College and held an advantage in corner kicks with five versus two for their opponents.
The Titans will continue their homestand with a match against Lake Forest scheduled for Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
