Transfer defensive back Shadwel Nkuba II has been named the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) Newcomer of the Week. The announcement was made Tuesday by the league office following his performance in Illinois State’s 38-36 double-overtime win against North Alabama.
Nkuba II, a transfer from Louisiana, recorded a career-high 10 tackles in the game, including five solo stops. He also contributed a sack, 1.5 tackles-for-loss, and an interception. This marks his fourth consecutive game with an interception, tying the team lead from 2024 set by Tye Niekamp.
He joins other weekly conference honorees: quarterback D.J. Williams of Southern Illinois for offense, linebacker Chris Presto of Southern Illinois for defense, and placekicker Andrew Lastovska of Youngstown State for special teams.
Illinois State will have a bye week before facing No. 1 ranked North Dakota State on October 4 at home to begin MVFC play.
