After a late-night legislative session, Illinois lawmakers approved an amended bill related to Chicago mass transit funding. The changes came after criticism over proposals for an amusement tax and event surcharge fee intended to support the city’s transit system. According to Rep. Dennis Tipsword Jr., the amendment was introduced with little notice or opportunity for public review.

“This legislation passed in the middle of the night, on the final day of the fall veto session, with no time for the public or stakeholders to review the amendment. These shady tactics only further erode public trust in this state government. There was no reason to pass this bailout in the 11th hour except to try to avoid scrutiny. Democrats have once again put politics before people. It’s a disgrace and an insult to all Illinoisans,” said Tipsword.

Additional coverage of recent legislative activity included bills addressing federal involvement in immigration raids, criminal record sealing for non-serious crimes, and energy policy.

This week also saw recognition for first responders across Illinois. “Thank you to all of our first responders for all that you do for our communities,” Tipsword stated.

Demographic projections indicate that Illinois could lose more than one million residents by 2050, placing it last among U.S. states in terms of population growth according to forecasts from the University of Virginia. Tipsword noted that decades of public policy decisions have contributed to residents leaving and suggested reforms such as tax relief and pro-business measures as possible solutions.

In law enforcement news, Derek Lopez of El Paso was arrested following threats made against former President Donald Trump within Central District of Illinois jurisdiction. FBI Director Kash Patel commented: “The threats against President Trump allegedly posted by this individual are heinous and have no place in American society,” he told Fox News Digital. “Let this be a message to all who consider threats of violence not just against public officials, but any American, that this FBI will find you and bring you to justice. I want to thank our local partners, the El Paso PD in Illinois, as well as USSS who assisted us with this case.”

Tipsword has represented Illinois’ 105th House District since his election in 2023 as a Republican, succeeding Dan Brady.
