Bloomington School District 87 students suspended 476 times in a single school year

Bloomington School District 87 reported 476 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 476 students during the year. That equates to 9 percent of the 5,300 students enrolled.

Of the 192 in-school suspensions, 140 were given to boys and 52 were given to girls, including 57 elementary or middle schoolers and 135 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 163 incidents. There were 26 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 178 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 284 out-of-school suspensions, 190 were given to boys and 94 were given to girls, including 188 elementary or middle schoolers and 96 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for violence without physical injury. The category includes 160 incidents. There were 107 incidents of unspecified reasons. For 118 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
