McLean County Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Sept. 5.
The Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Central Illinois announced today that ground-breaking of the Peoria Ronald McDonald House will begin Mon., Sept. 17, 2018. A brief ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the planned location at the corner of Spalding and Monroe in the heart of the downtown medical district. The ceremony is open to the public and will include major donor recognition as well as entertainment by the Washington Central Intermediate Band and Washington Community High School Marching Panthers. Light refreshments will be served. Parking will be available for the media in the lot on Spalding, across from the planned location. Interviews can be arranged before or immediately after the ceremony.
"This will mark a special day, as we officially break ground on the Peoria Ronald McDonald House and become a member of this community," said Kelly Thompson, Chief Executive Officer of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Illinois. "Peoria has welcomed us with open arms, and we are so grateful for the community’s support which will help our charity serve hundreds of families each year."
The ground-breaking ceremony will begin with a welcome from Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis and Peoria Capital Campaign Committee Honorary Chair Gordon Honegger, Chairman Emeritus of Morton Community Bank. Co-Chairs Julie Locke from The DAX Foundation and Terry Clark, central Illinois McDonald’s Owner/Operator, will also speak. Additional speakers will include a former Ronald McDonald House family, Adam and Christine Simmons, and First District Councilwoman Denise Moore.
The Peoria Ronald McDonald House (RMH) is being developed by River City Construction and designed by the architectural firm Farnsworth Group. The four-story building will feature 22 mini-suites and program space including a community room, game room, arts and crafts room, kitchens, indoor and outdoor playgrounds, and family and living rooms to serve over 700 families annually. The new RMH will also provide hundreds of volunteer opportunities for the community, as well as a dozen or more new jobs, and is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.
