Cold Weather Drainage Tips

31

With the threat of significant precipitation on frozen ground this week, the City of Bloomington is reminding residents that they can take steps to ensure they have proper drainage around their property. Frozen ground prevents storm water from soaking into the ground, which results in a higher rate of storm water runoff. Heavy rainfall is more likely to cause flooding in streets and in and around buildings because it doesn’t have anywhere else to go.

1. Check roof drains, patio drains, footing drains, window well drains, downspouts, cleanouts, and sump pumps to ensure they are properly connected and the discharge is facing the correct direction to drain away from structures.

2. If you have check valves or back flow valves, ensure they are clear of debris and working properly.

3. Remove any temporary structures or other materials out of the path of drainage ways, which include ditches and other channels on or near a property.

4. Clear snow, ice, or other debris from nearby inlets to allow for drainage into the storm water system.
