Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Champaign) will back a foreign fire insurance board bill after discovering what it is during a meeting of the Illinois General Assembly.
“Where do you find these bills? This is amazing,” Rose said. “What even is a foreign fireboard? Please tell us what this is as opposed to an in-state fireboard.”
Sen. Robert Martwick (D-Chicago) said it’s something that he is familiar with as foreign fire insurance fees were “established generations ago.”
“It’s a fee levied on insurance policies,” he said. “(It’s) sold to residents in the state of Illinois who are not domiciled in the state of Illinois. It’s collected and distributed to local fire departments for the benefit of that department.”
“I intend to vote for this bill because this is the most interesting piece of arcane knowledge that I’ve achieved today,” Rose replied.
According to the Illinois General Assembly's website, the measure passed the Senate unanimously with numerous Republicans co-sponsoring the bill.
The proposed law was sent to the House on Feb. 28, according to the Illinois General Assembly website.
