Illinois Rep. Dan Brady urged constituents to take caution when school buses are on the road in an Aug. 22 Facebook post.
The Illinois School Board of Education issued a PDF about school bus safety.
"It's back to school time! Please be extra cautious sharing the road with busses" Brady said on Facebook.
He went into further detail in a news release on his website.
"School is back in session for many children" Brady said in the release. "Getting on and off the school bus is the most dangerous part of the ride for students. Make sure you pay close attention when sharing the road with school busses, stay patient, and keep an eye out for children."
He also showed a link to a news article that addressed regulations about sharing the road with school buses, including bus warnings, which are flashing yellow lights indicating that a bus driver is about to stop to load or unload students.
The bus driver will turn on the red flashing lights and extend the stop arm to demonstrate that the bus has stopped, then students will be getting on or off the bus. The penalties for illegally passing a school bus are a mandatory minimum fine of $300 and the suspension of your driver’s license for three months.
A second offense or conviction within five years will warrant a mandatory minimum fine of $1,000 and a one-year suspension of the driver’s license. The offense is not criminal, but it can allegedly impact a person's insurance premiums.
