Illinois Manufacturers’ Association (IMA) kicked off Manufacturing Month with their "Makers on the Move" Tour, showcasing the state's thriving manufacturing industry. The tour, which aims to highlight the economic impact, investment, opportunity, and innovation brought about by Illinois' manufacturing sector, made two stops - Hoffman Transportation in Coal City and Lion Electric in Channahon.
The first stop at Hoffman Transportation in Coal City impressed visitors with its impressive facilities. The warehouse and transload/packaging distribution facility span over 420,000 square feet, dedicated to the packaging and distribution of resins. The facility also features G&D Trucking Inc., Hoffman Transportation's state-of-the-art custom warehouse management system. Notably, the Coal City location houses a rail transfer facility with an impressive 800 railcar transloading capacity serviced by the Union Pacific Railroad. Kevin Hoffman and Jordan Hoffman, the key figures behind Hoffman Transportation, were present and showcased their commitment to the industry.
The tour then proceeded to Lion Electric in Channahon, a leading manufacturer of zero-emission vehicles. Lion Electric specializes in designing and manufacturing all-electric school buses, midi/minibuses for special needs or urban transit, as well as urban trucks. The visit provided a glimpse into their assembly line, highlighting their dedication to transportation electrification in North America. Notably, the Lion Electric facility was transformed from a mere slab of concrete a year and a half ago, a testament to their rapid growth and innovation.
Manufacturing Month is an opportunity to recognize the vital role played by the manufacturing industry in Illinois' economy. The sector alone contributes approximately $580 billion in annual economic impact, fostering growth and job creation across the state. The "Makers on the Move" Tour, organized by the IMA, serves as a platform to showcase the contributions and achievements of manufacturers in Illinois.
