High temperatures are expected across Illinois throughout the week. Authorities have issued several guidelines to help residents stay safe during the extreme heat.
Residents are advised to avoid direct sunlight whenever possible. For those who must be outside, wearing sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and a wide-brimmed hat is recommended. Staying in shaded areas or under awnings can also provide some relief from the sun.
Strenuous outdoor activities should be minimized to prevent overexertion. Lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing that covers as much skin as possible is suggested to reduce the risk of sunburn.
Hydration is crucial during high temperatures. People are encouraged to consume plenty of non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated fluids even if they do not feel thirsty. Water, diluted juices, and electrolyte solutions are considered best for maintaining hydration levels, while carbonated drinks should be avoided.
To keep indoor environments cool, it is recommended to keep lights low or off and shades drawn. Avoiding the use of ovens can also help maintain lower indoor temperatures. Ensuring proper ventilation with air conditioners and fans is essential; however, it is noted that fans alone will not prevent heat-related illnesses when temperatures reach the high 90s.
During periods of extreme heat, utilizing cooling centers, public pools, and air-conditioned stores and malls can significantly reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses. Even a few hours spent in an air-conditioned environment can make a difference.
