Illinois’ ban on "bump stocks" remains in place despite a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down a federal ban on such devices. A spokesperson for Attorney General Kwame Raoul stated, “Illinois law is not affected by the decision.” Advocates on both sides of the gun control debate are awaiting further announcements from the high court regarding a broader constitutional challenge to the state’s 2023 firearms ban, which includes the bump stock prohibition.

Lawmakers plan to revisit legislation aimed at restoring wetlands protections during the upcoming Fall Veto Session. The bill did not pass both Houses of the General Assembly this spring.

House Republicans are working on bipartisan legislation to extend energy assistance for low-income families. HB 4471 amends the Energy Assistance Act and removes the sunset clause on the Supplemental Low-Income Energy Assistance Fund, previously set to expire on January 1, 2025. The fund provides payments to utility companies and covers home weatherization services for those enrolled in the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). From September 2022 through May 2023, over 311,000 households benefited from LIHEAP funding. Applications remain open until August 2024 for current recipients.

In August, some state parks near Springfield will offer free camping during the Illinois State Fair.

Residents are advised to stay out of direct sunlight, wear sunscreen and protective clothing, avoid strenuous activities, and stay hydrated with non-alcoholic fluids. Additional tips include keeping homes cool by using air conditioners or fans and taking advantage of cooling centers and public facilities.
