Former Chicago Alderman Ed Burke was sentenced to two years in prison and a $2 million fine this week in his corruption case. However, Burke may be allowed to pay that fine with his campaign funds, a provision currently under scrutiny in Illinois.

"I regret the pain and sorrow I have caused," Burke stated during his sentencing.

The issue of using campaign funds to pay legal fines has sparked debate among lawmakers and ethics reform advocates. Efforts are underway to amend the law to prevent such practices in the future.
