8. SUPERINTENDENT COMMENTS
Dr. Weikle said she hopes everyone is enjoying their summer so far. Summer school is underway for more than 950 students across the districts. Students in grades PreK-8 are focusing on literacy, math, and social emotional learning. Students in grades 9-12 are doing credit recovery and our special education extended school year is focusing on students' individual goals. Each of these programs run through the end of June. Unit 5 is pleased to once again be a recipient of the Freedom Schools grant from the Illinois State Board of Education. This grant is a multicultural enrichment program focused on literacy, civic engagement, and STEAM activities for middle school aged students. Freedom School runs through the mid July.
This summer our maintenance and custodial staff are busy doing our normal summer cleaning which includes moving some teachers from one classroom to another, replacing HVAC filters, and doing preventative maintenance on our kitchen. Additionally, our team is completing over 150 projects across the district. This is pretty incredible considering we only have 45 working days to complete this work while our buildings are being used by camps and staff using vacation time. Thank you to our operations and maintenance staff for all you do to get our buildings ready for the start of the school year.
Unit 5 is providing free meals for anyone 18 years of age or younger this summer. Breakfast is available at Northpoint and Oakdale Elementaries from 8:15 am to 9:00 am and lunch is available from 11:30-12:30 through July 26, Monday-Friday. Chiddix Junior High is also serving breakfast and lunch, Monday-Thursday, through July 18. Lunch is available at Unity Community Center from 11:30- 12:30 through July 26. Adults wishing to purchase a breakfast or lunch may do so and must pay in cash.
Unit 5 is still looking to fill positions for the 2024-25 school year. We are specifically looking for individuals interested in being a paraeducator (teaching assistant), EOP (administrative assistant), custodians, general and special education teaching positions. We are always looking for individuals interested in serving as a substitute teacher, substitute teaching assistant, substitute nurse, and substitute custodian. Our HR department will be holding on site job fairs again this summer so watch our Unit 5 Facebook Page and Website for dates and times.
Finally, June is also a month where we commemorate equity and inclusion of individuals and groups of people. Unit 5 is recognizing and celebrating Pride month this June to support our LGBTQ students, families, and staff and to encourage others to honor our diverse community. This is a part of our strong commitment to equity and inclusion, to ensure all students, families, and staff feel welcome, respected, supported, and valued.
