Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has announced his intention to seek a third term in office, marking the first time since the 1980s that an Illinois governor will pursue more than two terms. Pritzker, who was first elected in 2018 and began serving in 2019, has overseen a nearly $15 billion increase in state spending during his tenure, which equates to approximately a 40 percent rise over six years. Under his administration, Illinois is noted for having one of the highest tax burdens and unemployment rates in the Midwest. Additionally, significant funding has been directed towards illegal immigrants.

In legislative news, Senate Bill 19 has been signed into law by Governor Pritzker, prompting criticism from Illinois Republicans. The bill extends the terms of members of the Prisoner Review Board (PRB) from six to eight years. Critics argue this move reduces accountability at a time when thorough vetting is needed for PRB appointees. The board is responsible for deciding on parole for individuals convicted of serious offenses and has approved more releases under Pritzker's administration compared to previous governors.

A tragic incident last year involved a parolee released by the board who committed murder less than 24 hours after release, sparking outrage among Republican lawmakers concerned about public safety risks associated with these decisions.

Ahead of July Fourth celebrations, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and State Fire Marshal’s office are urging residents to prioritize fireworks safety and adhere to state regulations. Only licensed professionals are authorized to handle display fireworks under the Illinois Explosives Act. Officials reported 156 injuries and one death related to fireworks during the most recent reporting period.

For emergencies or violations regarding fireworks regulations, residents can contact IDNR at 217-782-9976 or OSFM at 217-785-0969.

In community events, a recent kids’ fishing derby brought smiles as young participants enjoyed catching fish and making new friends.
