Very high temperatures are expected to continue across Illinois today. Authorities have issued several guidelines to ensure public safety during the extreme heat.
Residents are advised to stay out of the sun whenever possible. If outdoor exposure is unavoidable, it is recommended to wear sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and a wide-brimmed hat. Seeking shade or staying under awnings can also help reduce direct sun exposure.
Officials caution against overexertion and strenuous outdoor activities during this period. Lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing that covers as much skin as possible is advised to prevent sunburn.
Hydration is crucial; individuals should consume plenty of non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated fluids even if they do not feel thirsty. Water, diluted juices, and electrolyte solutions are considered the best options. Carbonated drinks should be avoided.
To keep indoor environments cooler, residents are encouraged to keep lights low or off, draw shades, and avoid using ovens. Proper ventilation with air conditioners and fans is essential; however, it is noted that fans alone will not prevent heat-related illnesses when temperatures rise into the high 90s.
The use of cooling centers, public pools, and air-conditioned stores and malls is highly recommended during periods of extreme heat. "Exposure to air conditioning for even a few hours a day will reduce the risk for heat-related illness," officials stated.
