ROCHESTER, Mich. – Despite leading in shot count for most of the match, Illinois State Soccer (1-2-1, 0-0-0 MVC) was defeated by Oakland (1-3-1, 0-0-0 Horizon) with a score of 1-0 on Thursday.
The decisive moment came in the 32nd minute when Putri Sazali scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal for Oakland. Illinois State dominated opportunities, outshooting Oakland 11-6, with shots on goal even at 3-3.
The Redbirds generated 12 corner kicks, the most for the program since the 2014 campaign. This marked just the second time since the spring season of 2021 that Illinois State has achieved more than ten corner kicks in a single game.
In the first half, Illinois State took seven shots with two coming from inside the box as Izzy Cameron (24') and Jade Rehberger (38') attempted to break through. Cameron's shot was on target but saved by Oakland.
Illinois State increased pressure in the second half with four shots and two shots on goal; however, Oakland's defense remained resilient.
The Redbirds will next return to Adelaide Street Field for a match against Northwestern at 7 p.m. on September 5.
