Illinois State secured its first road win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Western Illinois on Sunday in Macomb. Freshman Chloe Cline's second goal of the season proved decisive for Illinois State (2-3-1, 0-0-0 MVC), which overcame Western Illinois (0-5-0, 0-0-0 OVC).
Cline found the net in the ninth minute following an assist from Jade Rehberger on a corner kick, marking her second game-winning goal of the year. Redshirt freshman Madi Valenti contributed significantly by achieving her second shutout of the season.
This match was notable as it marked the second instance this season where Cline and Rehberger combined for a goal from a corner kick, having previously scored in the 51st minute to win their season opener against Green Bay on August 15.
Illinois State maintained pressure throughout but was unable to extend their lead despite dominating chances. The Redbirds recorded 17 shots, including 11 on target, and generated 10 corner kicks. Valenti made three saves during the match and successfully managed a late free kick from Western Illinois just outside the box.
Next, Illinois State will host Northern Illinois at Adelaide Street Field on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
