Illinois State Soccer (2-5-1, 0-0-0 MVC) experienced a 2-0 defeat against Butler (5-2-1, 0-0-0 Big East) on Sunday at Adelaide Street Field in their non-conference finale.
Butler took an early lead in the 7th minute when Abigail Isger scored directly from a corner kick. Illinois State nearly equalized just before halftime as Josie Spann beat her defender and took a shot that went wide left. The Redbirds earned a corner kick with seconds remaining in the first half but failed to convert.
The Bulldogs extended their lead early in the second half after a loose ball from a corner kick set up Talia Sommer for a goal. Butler then maintained control to secure the victory.
Ava Watson led Illinois State with two shots, including one on target in the 76th minute. Freshman Maggie Dowling contributed another shot on goal for the Redbirds.
Butler dominated opportunities, leading in shots 12-5 and holding an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Madi Valenti recorded five saves for Illinois State, three of which came in the first half.
The Bulldogs will begin MVC play Thursday at Southern Illinois with a 6 p.m. kickoff. No livestream is available.
