Illinois Wesleyan University's men's tennis juniors Ian Turnbull and Ben Vigneri began their participation in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional on Friday, September 20, hosted by Washington University in St. Louis.
In the doubles tournament, Turnbull and Vigneri were defeated by Anderson University's Martin Suarez and Pedro Alves Sette with a score of 8-6. The pair then moved to the consolation bracket, where they secured an 8-4 victory against Eli Bartek and Carson Fisher from Webster University. This win advanced them to the round of 16 after a bye in the consolation round of 32. They are scheduled to face Cole Shifferly and Tharakesh Ashokar from Wabash College on Saturday, September 21, at 8 a.m.
Vigneri also competed in singles play, defeating Jake Fascione from Hanover College with set scores of 6-4, 6-2. However, he was later eliminated in the round of 64 by sixth-seeded Emil Grantcharov from the University of Chicago with scores of 6-0, 6-1.
Turnbull's singles match against Arturo Mendoza from Anderson saw him narrowly losing in a close contest. After winning the first set 6-2, Turnbull dropped the second set 6-4 and was edged out in the tiebreaker with a score of 13-11. He will compete again in the second round of the consolation bracket at 11 a.m. tomorrow.
