As Rail Safety Week commences, Operation Lifesaver has issued essential guidelines to ensure public safety around railroad tracks. These tips highlight the importance of awareness and caution when near railways.
Key points include the unpredictability of train schedules. "Freight trains don’t travel at fixed times. Schedules for passenger trains often change. Always expect a train," advises Operation Lifesaver.
The organization emphasizes that all train tracks are private property, warning against trespassing due to its illegality and inherent danger. They note the significant stopping distance required for freight trains traveling at 55 mph, which can exceed a mile—the equivalent of 18 football fields.
Operation Lifesaver underscores the massive weight of locomotives, with an average locomotive weighing about 400,000 pounds or 200 tons, potentially reaching up to 6,000 tons. This comparison highlights the disproportionate impact between a car and a train.
"Trains have the right of way 100% of the time over pedestrians and vehicles, including police and emergency vehicles," they state unequivocally.
Safety advice includes maintaining a safe distance from tracks due to train overhangs and always assuming tracks are in use regardless of their appearance. The organization also reminds that trains can move on any track in either direction at any time, sometimes being pushed by locomotives rather than pulled.
Modern trains' reduced noise levels are another critical point: "Today’s trains are quieter than ever, producing no telltale 'clackety-clack.'"
To ensure safety at crossings, it is crucial to cross only at designated pedestrian or roadway crossings while obeying posted warning signs and signals. Lastly, staying alert around railroad tracks is vital; distractions such as texting or using headphones should be avoided to hear approaching trains clearly.
These rail safety tips aim to reduce accidents and fatalities by promoting vigilant behavior around railroad environments during Rail Safety Week and beyond.
