Illinois State men’s golf finishes ninth at Purdue Fall Invitational

In the competitive field at the Purdue Fall Invitational, the Illinois State Redbirds secured ninth place overall with a three-round score of 880.

Indiana University claimed the team title with a three-round total of 850. Miami (Ohio) followed in second place with an 854. Other teams finishing ahead of Illinois State included Iowa (870), Purdue (873), Toledo (875), Marquette (876), VCU (876), and Wisconsin (879). Ball State and Southern Illinois tied for tenth with scores of 882 each, while Western Kentucky (891), Northern Illinois (894), Purdue Fort Wayne (901), and Butler (902) completed the tournament standings.

Freshman Aiden Cudney led the Redbirds in the final round by shooting a 71. TJ Barger carded a 74, Alex McCulla posted a 75, Pietro Pontiggia scored a 78, and freshman Max Faucquez ended with an 83.

Alex McCulla was the top performer for ISU over all rounds, finishing even-par at 216. He had four birdies and ten pars in his final round, tying for 13th place in the tournament.

Next weekend, the Redbirds will compete at the Badger Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin on September 29-30.

Cudney's one-under-par performance dropped his total score to +4. Despite starting slowly with bogeys on his first two holes, he played his last sixteen holes at three under par, including three birdies and thirteen pars to tie for 28th.

Barger’s two-over-par third round resulted in an individual finish at 32nd place. His final round included three birdies along with twelve pars.

Pontiggia recorded three birdies and nine pars during his final round of 78, placing him in a tie for 41st overall.

Max Faucquez concluded his participation with an 83 that featured ten pars, placing him individually at position number sixty-five.

In addition to team play, Senior Will Troy competed in the Purdue Individual event where he placed fifth overall with a three-round total of 214. His final round began slowly but he finished strong to close out even-par at seventy-one.

Francis Bautista also participated as an individual and tied for ninth after shooting a final-round seventy-three on a par-71 course. His concluding performance featured one birdie alongside fourteen pars.
