Illinois State falls to Murray State in MVC opener

Illinois State volleyball fell to Murray State in its Missouri Valley Conference opener on Friday night at CEFCU Arena. The Redbirds, now 5-9 overall and 0-1 in the MVC, were defeated by the Racers (6-4, 1-0 MVC) in four sets.

The match scores were 22-25, 22-25, 25-19, and 21-25.

In the first set, Illinois State took an early lead of 15-11 into the media timeout. However, Murray State responded with a late surge to win the set 25-22.

The second set saw another early lead for Illinois State at 11-8 after a 6-0 run. But Murray State again managed to take control with a key run, winning the set by the same score of 25-22.

Illinois State rallied in the third set with three consecutive runs that gave them a steady lead. They maintained their advantage to win the set 25-19.

The fourth set began with Murray State taking an early lead. Despite Illinois State's efforts to close the gap and briefly take an advantage at 18-16, Murray State finished strong on a 9-3 run to secure a final set victory of 25-21.

Aida Shadewald led Illinois State with 19 kills. Madison Smith recorded 13 digs, while Mekaila Aupiu had 46 assists. Khenedi Guest contributed seven total blocks.

Key points from the match include Illinois State being outhit (.206) by Murray State (.250), and sophomore Abby Reck making her debut for Illinois State.

Illinois State will face Belmont next on September 28 at CEFCU Arena.
