On October 4, 2024, Representative Bunting shared a series of updates with the Springfield community. Among the key topics were safety tips for the harvest season, an audit revealing missing data in unemployment claims, a visit to a local community center, and available energy assistance programs.

As the harvest season is underway, Rep. Bunting emphasized road safety. He advised drivers to remain vigilant and avoid distractions, particularly when encountering slow-moving vehicles. “Slow down when you encounter slow moving vehicles. The flashing amber lights mean CAUTION!” he noted. Bunting also reminded motorists that it is illegal to pass within 100 feet of an intersection and urged patience on the roads.

An audit conducted on Illinois' unemployment claim system during the pandemic revealed significant issues. Auditors found missing data for $6 million intended for nearly 3,000 recipients in the last fiscal year. According to the Auditor General’s office, the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) failed to "maintain accurate and complete" records. This follows a previous audit highlighting over $5 billion in potentially fraudulent or excessive payments from 2020-2022.

Rep. Bunting recently visited CrossRoads Community Center in Milford, where he engaged with seniors and youth at the facility. He expressed appreciation for the center's role in bringing people together: “What an incredible place for those in the Milford area to gather!”

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is now accepting applications from income-qualified households until August 15, 2025, or until funds are depleted. This program offers support for natural gas, propane, electricity bills, and furnace assistance.

Additionally, Illinois currently has a backlog of unpaid bills amounting to $1,693,158,206 as processed by the state Comptroller's office.
