Illinois State University linebacker Tye Niekamp has been recognized for his performance in the Redbirds' recent 45-10 victory over Southern Illinois. Niekamp, a sophomore, was named the Stats Perform FCS National Defensive Player of the Week for games ending on October 5. Additionally, he received the Missouri Valley Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor.
Niekamp's recognition came alongside other national honorees: Richie Munoz from Weber State (Offense), Dillon Fedor from Houston Christian (Special Teams), and David Avit from Villanova (Freshman). The North Dakota State Bison were also named the Stats Perform FCS National Team of the Week. These awards are presented by FedEx.
In Normal, Illinois, Niekamp led a strong defensive effort for Illinois State at Saluki Stadium. He recorded 11 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one interception, and one pass breakup against Southern Illinois. His interception set up a successful trick play that resulted in a touchdown pass from Daniel Sobkowicz to Xavier Loyd.
Throughout this season, despite an early hamstring injury, Niekamp has achieved 44 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 5.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, four pass breakups and one forced fumble over six games.
The Redbirds will host Missouri State on Saturday at Hancock Stadium with kickoff scheduled for noon. Fans are encouraged to participate in a "White Out" by wearing white attire to support their team.
