Illinois State University has secured the second position in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) All-Sports Championship standings for the 2023-2024 season. The announcement was made in St. Louis, with Drake University taking first place with a score of 8.787, marking its first MVC All-Sports Trophy win and becoming only the second private institution to achieve this honor.
Illinois State's performance included a team title in women's golf and top-four finishes across various sports such as baseball, men's cross country, and several track & field events. These achievements contributed to an aggregate score of 8.442.
Indiana State claimed third place with six MVC first-place finishes and a score of 8.148. Belmont University followed closely, finishing fourth or better in eight sports, resulting in a fourth-place standing with a score of 7.696. Missouri State and Southern Illinois completed the top-six rankings with scores of 7.463 and 7.411 respectively.
Historically, Illinois State, Missouri State, or Wichita State have dominated the league's all-sports championship trophy since 1995 until Drake's recent victory. Illinois State boasts an impressive record with five championships between 1996-2001 and has consistently placed within the top three for most years over the past three decades.
The MVC All-Sports Trophy is determined by averaging each school's finish across sponsored championships within the conference. Points are awarded based on placement in these events, with additional points given for post-season achievements in specific sports like baseball and basketball.
