Illinois State University secured a significant victory against Murray State in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. The Redbirds, ranked No. 21, emerged victorious with a 40-32 win at Roy Stewart Stadium on Saturday.

The Redbirds' quarterback, Tommy Rittenhouse, played a pivotal role in the game by amassing 475 yards of total offense and contributing three touchdowns. This performance was crucial for Illinois State's bounce-back effort following previous setbacks.

In the first quarter, after forcing Murray State into a three-and-out, Rittenhouse initiated scoring with a 40-yard touchdown run. Ian Wagner extended the lead early in the second quarter with a field goal. However, Murray State responded quickly as Jawaun Northington scored with a 48-yard run.

Rittenhouse then connected with Wenkers Wright on a pass that set up another score for Illinois State. Despite an interception that allowed Murray State to close the gap before halftime, Illinois State maintained its momentum in the third quarter.

Rittenhouse returned from an injury check to further solidify his team's lead with another touchdown pass to Daniel Sobkowicz. Although Murray State managed to narrow the deficit again through quick plays and conversions led by Jayden Johannsen and Northington, Illinois State held firm.

The final moments saw Wagner securing Illinois State's victory with another field goal despite James London's late attempt for Murray State bringing them closer on the scoreboard.

Key performances included Rittenhouse's career-high achievements both in passing and rushing yards. Sobkowicz also stood out by leading his team in touchdowns this season while Xavier Loyd achieved personal bests in receiving yards during this game.

Following this win, Illinois State will have a bye week before facing Youngstown State at Hancock Stadium on November 2nd.
