The Illinois Wesleyan University men's and women's swimming and diving teams commenced their 2023-24 season with a meet against Lewis University on October 13, in Romeoville, Illinois. The men's team faced a significant defeat with a score of 221-41, while the women's team was defeated by 197-65. The event included 28 competitions at the Lewis Pool.
In the women's events, the team secured second place in the 200-yard medley relay. Sophomore Kayleigh Kuschewski, freshmen Abi Zelikman and Olivia Kula, along with senior Hannah Murray completed the race in 1:56.37. The men's relay team finished third with a time of 1:40.92.
Junior Hadley Fudge achieved IWU's sole victory in the women's events with a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, clocking in at 1:01.65. She also placed second in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 32.08. Freshman Olivia Kula made her debut by securing third place in the 200-yard freestyle and second place in the 100-yard butterfly.
In other performances for women, Sam Borre finished third in the 500-yard freestyle during her collegiate debut with a time of 5:38.36. Emily Marks came third in the 100-yard freestyle at 58.49 seconds, while Jackie Rae Kelch took second place in the 50-yard backstroke at 30.09 seconds.
On the men's side, Alex Kula earned third place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.92, while Jay Jenkins took third place finishes both in the 50 and the 100-yard backstroke events.
Senior Ethan Lowder achieved second place for his performance in the men's events by finishing at 23.84 seconds in the 50-yard butterfly and secured two third-place finishes for his times of 49.92 seconds and 55.65 seconds respectively for other events.
The Titans concluded their participation by securing second-place finishes for both teams' efforts during their respective races of the final event ––the men’s and women’s teams competed well throughout these relay contests despite facing losses earlier on during individual events.
Looking ahead, Illinois Wesleyan will host its next competition at Fort Natatorium on October28th which promises another exciting round filled up yet again!
