In a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin match, the Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team faced a setback against Wheaton College. The match took place on Saturday, April 27, at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Ill., resulting in an 8-1 defeat for IWU. This loss places IWU at a 9-9 overall record and 2-5 in CCIW play, while Wheaton advances to a 14-6 overall and 4-3 in conference action.
The sole victory for Illinois Wesleyan came from Sophomore Ian Turnbull at No. 1 singles. Turnbull, from Bloomington, Ill., secured his win with set scores of 6-3 and 6-1. At No. 2 singles, Sophomore Ben Vigneri from Casper, Wyo., showed resilience but was ultimately defeated with scores of 6-3 and 6-1.
In doubles competition, Turnbull teamed up with Senior Ryan McCoy from Arlington Heights, Ill., but they were unable to overcome their opponents at No. 1 doubles, falling with a score of 8-4.
Looking ahead, the CCIW Tournament is scheduled to begin on Thursday, May 2. Quarterfinals will take place that day followed by semifinals and championship matches on May 3 and May 4 respectively. The tournament will be hosted at the Kean Kilgour-Trailblazer Tennis Complex in Waukesha, Wis.
Singles competition results included:
1. Ian Turnbull (IWU) defeated Jack Booker (WC) with scores of 6-3, 6-1.
2. Tim Steiner (WC) defeated Ben Vigneri (IWU) with scores of 6-3, 6-1.
3. Joey Geisz (WC) defeated Ryan McCoy (IWU) with scores of 6-2, 6-1.
4. Jacob Williams (WC) defeated Thad Dillow (IWU) with scores of 6-1, 6-1.
5. Evan Walther (WC) won against Zeke Cross (IWU), who retired after trailing by four games.
6. Andrew Jang (WC) defeated Jordan Sibley-Diggs (IWU) with scores of 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles:
1. Jack Booker/Cody Ching (WC) won against Ian Turnbull/Ryan McCoy (IWU) with a score of 8-4.
2. Jacob Williams/Joey Geisz (WC) triumphed over Ben Vigneri/Zeke Cross (IWU), winning by an impressive margin of 8-0.
3. Andrew Jang/Tim Steiner (WC) secured victory over Thad Dillow/Griffin Hammond (IWU), finishing at an impressive scoreline of 8-2.
