Illinois State University's volleyball team faced a tough challenge against UIC, ultimately falling in a five-set match at Credit Union 1 Arena on Friday night. Despite a strong performance from sophomore Caitlyn Little, who achieved a career-high of 21 kills, the Redbirds were unable to secure victory.
The match scores were 20-25, 26-24, 26-28, 25-23, and 9-15 in favor of UIC. The Flames took an early lead in the first set with a decisive 5-0 run and maintained their advantage to win the set 25-20. Illinois State fought back in the second set, tying the score at 13-13 and eventually winning it 26-24 after extra points.
In the third set, Illinois State initially led but was overtaken by UIC's resilience. The Flames managed to clinch the set with a narrow 28-26 win. The fourth set saw both teams battling closely again, with Illinois State emerging victorious at 25-23 to force a fifth and final set.
The deciding set began with both teams exchanging points until UIC gained momentum with a crucial 4-0 run. The Flames held onto their lead and finished strong for a final score of 15-9.
Statistical leaders for Illinois State included Sammi Bunch with 26 digs and Mekaila Aupiu achieving a career-high of 53 assists. Notably, three Redbirds recorded double-doubles during the match: Caitlyn Little, Oliwia Caputa, and Mekaila Aupiu.
Despite being outhit by UIC (.204) compared to Illinois State's (.180), the Redbirds showed determination throughout the game. Their next matchup is scheduled against Valparaiso on Saturday night at the ARC in Valparaiso, Indiana.
