Illinois state volleyball triumphs over Indiana state in straight sets

Illinois State volleyball secured a victory over Indiana State with a three-set sweep on Saturday night in Terre Haute. The Redbirds' win improves their record to 12-14 overall and 7-6 in the Missouri Valley Conference, while the Sycamores fall to 4-21 overall and 1-12 in conference play.

In the first set, Illinois State took control after a close start, executing a 4-0 run that led them to a 9-4 advantage, prompting Indiana State to call a timeout. Following the break, the Redbirds extended their lead with six consecutive points, eventually winning the set 25-13 due to errors from Indiana State.

The second set saw Illinois State establishing an early lead of up to six points following another 4-0 run. They maintained this momentum throughout, not trailing at any point and securing the set with a block by Khenedi Guest for a final score of 25-15.

The third set began closely contested until both teams were tied at 10 points each. Indiana State briefly took their first lead of the match at 13-11 before Illinois State regained control and forced another timeout from their opponents at 18-16. Despite efforts from Indiana State to narrow the gap, Illinois State completed the sweep with a 25-19 win.

Key players for Illinois State included Oliwia Caputa with eleven kills, Sammi Bunch with twenty-one digs, Mekaila Aupiu providing thirty-four assists, and Khenedi Guest tying her career high with eight total blocks.

Notably, Illinois State outhit Indiana State .265 to .036. This victory marks their third consecutive road win against Indiana State.

Looking ahead, Illinois State will return home to CEFCU Arena for matches against Southern Illinois and Missouri State next Friday and Saturday. The upcoming Saturday game will also celebrate Senior Night for the team.
