Illinois State edges past Cornell in close non-conference game

The Illinois State men's basketball team secured a close 80-77 victory against Cornell Big Red in Ithaca, New York. This win concludes their non-conference schedule with an 8-4 record. Jack Daugherty led the Redbirds with 16 points off the bench, while Chase Walker contributed 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Landon Wolf added 13 points, and Dalton Banks scored 10.

Johnny Kinziger provided a game-high five assists along with five points and two rebounds. The Redbirds out-rebounded Cornell 31-to-26 and shot effectively from beyond the arc, making over half of their attempts.

Illinois State will return to conference play on December 29 against UIC Flames at CEFCU Arena. In the first half against Cornell, ISU made nine out of fourteen three-point attempts, experiencing six lead changes and five ties. Although trailing by three at halftime, they managed to regain control in the second half.

Cornell's AK Okereke and Nazir Williams each scored 19 points for their team. Despite shooting well from the field overall, Cornell struggled from long range.

This matchup marked Illinois State's first encounter with an Ivy League team. The Redbirds have shown consistent performance this season when using their starting lineup of Dalton Banks, Landon Wolf, Johnny Kinziger, Ty Pence, and Chase Walker.

The next challenge for Illinois State will be facing UIC Flames as they aim to build on this recent success in their upcoming conference games.
